[Program Stage 3]PROGRAM

Third Stage
Advanced Course

February to December
: Unleash your creativity

In the third stage, you will belong to a research laboratory at the University of Tokyo and conduct a STEAM-type project-based research. You will solve a "problem" set according to your interests through experiments, fieldwork, and other methods. Furthermore, depending on the progress of your research, you will have the opportunity to present at international conferences and publish papers. In addition to these research activities, there will also be seminars on "research guidelines" and "research ethics," as well as site visits to partner companies

Student orientation and lectures prior to research [Common course]

This course will cover research guidelines and research ethics. The aim is to help you understand the nature of research and learn the necessary mindset for conducting it

Basic Course for Academic Paper Writing and English Presentations [Common Course]

You will learn how to write reports and papers, as well as tips for giving presentations in English

Site visits to partner companies [Optional course]

As an opportunity to learn about the connection between science and technology and society, we will conduct site visits to companies. Through factory tours and discussions with employees, we will experience firsthand how science and technology are realized in society, recognize the connection between science and technology and society, and consider social issues, including how past research results have been implemented in society

Reading and understanding academic papers and literature, and providing safety guidance for research activities

Under the guidance of researchers, students will read and analyze review papers and fundamental literature necessary for their research, and will also learn about topics not covered in high school, as well as content required for undergraduate-level research. Safety guidance tailored to each research topic will also be provided

Research activities include experiments and fieldwork in the laboratory

Under the guidance of researchers, you will conduct experiments, fieldwork, data analysis, report writing, and discussions. The research lab and research topic will be determined through matching based on the research proposal you prepared in the second stage, and will be decided through interviews. The activity schedule will be decided through discussions between the instructor, the administrative office, and the student. Although it varies depending on the research topic, most people visit the lab once or twice a month to conduct research activities. For those living far away, web conferencing systems may be used. Since you will be supervised by students and researchers from various countries enrolled at this university, you can also gain experience in international exchange through mutual learning

Portfolio creation [Research activities]

After each activity, you will compile a portfolio (mini-report) containing the data you recorded in your lab notebook, as well as any questions you have thought about regarding the assignments you brought home

Writing a research report [Research activity]

I will use the portfolio as a reference to create the interim and final reports

Research presentation meeting [Research activities]

We will present our results at the interim presentation and the final results presentation. At the interim presentation, after the oral presentations, we will hold group discussions to consider whether we can combine each student's research to solve new social problems or create something new. The final results presentation will be held jointly with the second stage presentation, and we will present our results to a large audience

Presentation of results at international conferences and in academic papers

Depending on the progress of your research, we will provide guidance on presenting at domestic and international academic conferences, participating in science competitions, and writing research papers. You may also have the opportunity to discuss with researchers from other countries
