Yudai Tanaka, Yokohama Science Frontier High School
Hello. My name is Yudai Tanaka, and I'm a second-year (soon to be third-year) student at Yokohama Science Frontier High School.
I was part of the first graduating class of UTokyoGSC, which means I started participating in UTokyoGSC about two years ago. I'm surprised that two years have already passed.
During my first year of university, I noticed posters for various universities' GSCs (Global Science Centers) plastered around the entrance hall. At first, I wanted to go to a different one, but the deadline was already just one day away. So I found a GSC that had a later deadline, aimed to cultivate researchers across all fields, and was even run by the University of Tokyo, and applied. Actually, this is why I ended up participating
I was prepared for the first stage of lectures to be difficult and rigorous, but while the content was certainly not easy, it was easy to understand and the atmosphere was enjoyable. I think this is the best environment for motivated people to study challenging material in an enjoyable way.
Also, as part of the lectures, we had the opportunity to hear about research currently being conducted at the University of Tokyo. As expected of the University of Tokyo, all the discussions about cutting-edge research were inspiring. I still remember the idea that, in addition to the trendy machine learning approach for high-speed robots, there is also a constraint-based approach to dealing with them.
In the second stage, I had a very hard time finding a research lab. I changed my original topic significantly, and after many twists and turns, I finally decided on my current research on motion sickness. From then until the presentation, I was really pressed for time. Due to the matching process and the pandemic, it was effectively only about six months, but I think I was able to conduct good research thanks to the tremendous support from the research lab

Right now, I'm working on developing my presentation at GSC in preparation for an academic conference. I only have one year left of high school, and many things are coming to an end, but I want to push through and do my best in both my research and my studies.
